STEP 1 - Keyword Targeting & Research

Our first step on the road towards making a website, are the keywords we're ultimately going to rank for our site is to generate a list of between 5,000-10,000 total keywords, and then cutting them down to the most likely candidates to allow us to rank in the #1 spot almost immediately. It sounds intimidating, but it's pretty easy with the right tools, and I'm going to guide you step-by-step through the process.

The first thing I want you to do is to identify the common phrases that best define your niche, basically the most popular terms to describe it to the common person. For example, for health and beauty related product, the most associated phrases would be "acne" or "acne cure" for women and "build muscle" or "get ripped" for men. For the Internet Marketing niche it would be "make money online" or “make money from home".

These saturated phrases will be the "seeds" we use to generate thousands of lower competition keywords that we can rank for quickly using methods.

Once you've noted three or four of these large seed phrases, it's time to use automated software to do the hard work for us by generating related keywords that people are actively searching for. Weuse two pieces of software to accomplish this goal, along with Google's own Adwords Keyword Tool.

You also do need some more tools as below:

1. Keyword Optimizer Pro

What a great little utility this is, created by Dave Guindon (who also created our favorite exit-redirect script Exit Splash, which we have covered in our Website Marketing tools section), Keyword Optimizer Pro quickly delivers far more related keywords than Google's own tool, and it's 100% FREE.

2. Use either (A) OR (B) based on your site plan, which depends on the type of your business and your site requirement. If your type of business can be good with Wordpress then use No.3. The Market Samurai or the Traffic Travis. If you have html site go for the all tools in one place sitebuildit.

(A) Site Build It – Inbuilt Keyword Research Tool

(B) Traffic Travis or Market Samurai – Analyze the top 20 competition.. Though there is a free version…but for better results go for the Pro version. Trust me it is absolutely worth every penny. Watch the below video.

3. Take the separate keyword results of all three services and copy the results to a single Excel sheet, combining them in one column.

Use the "Remove duplicates" command to get rid of keywords that two or more of the services found, usually just 15-20% of the list will be dupes (which is amazing when you think about how you generated thousands of keywords in just 10 minutes and so few of them are copies of each other).

4. Copy all of the keywords from your Excel list into Traffic Travis or Market Samurai's Keyword Research section.

Set Market Samurai to display keyword data for Total Searches, Adwords CPC (AWCPC), and SEO Comp (SEOC). Set to Match Type: "Phrase" and Period: "Monthly" with No Filters.

Click on Analyze Keywords and let MS do its thing. For 5,000 or more keywords it's going to take a bit to get the results, around a half hour. Once it's done, export the results in an Excel file and save.

5. Open the exported Excel file of Market Samurai results, and sort data by SEOC, ascending (from lowest value to the highest).

This is the fun part of the process. Scroll down the list to find the best 20 keywords that fit within our three keyword formulas:

A. Select 6 x "Doable Keywords" that have 5,000+ monthly searches, and up to 500,000 SEOC phrase match competition results.

B. Select 7 x "Relatively Easy Keywords" that have 2,500+ monthly searches, up to 250,000 SEOC phrase match competition results.

C. Select 7 x "Easy Keywords" that have 1,000+ monthly searches, and up to 50,000 SEOC phrase match competition results.

ADSENSE TIP - If you're using AdSense to monetize your sites, make sure you screen all keywords by another factor in addition to the above: Their AWCPC rating in Market Samurai. It has to be a minimum of $1.00 and above, and preferably above $1.50.

Never waste time ranking keywords that have less than a $1.00 AWCPC rating as they won't produce enough income to make your time worth it. Far better keywords out there to find using the methods in this guide.

By manually screening the Market Samurai results by ascending SEOC, you're basically cherry-picking the keywords that typically have the least amount of competition combined with the highest search levels (1000+)

Ongoing keyword research of tested keyword analysis is the formula for search engine success. This may sound like a lot of work - and it is! But with the new keyword search tools the amount of informed effort you put into your keyword campaign is what will ultimately generate your business' rewards..

Step II – Setting Up Your Website

By this point you've now isolated 20 total keywords that you've identified using the guidelines and parameters that were explained in Phase I.

Now it's time to lay the foundation of what will ultimately be a virtual real estate for you using those same keywords combined with a precise set of building blocks that allow your site to rise up the ranks right from day one.

Typically the industry refers to these types of tactics as "On Page" optimization, because you're altering exactly how your site is presented to Google's spider (Googlebot) towards the goal of ranking better for your keyword-based content.

Our first step towards our new website is the selection of the main domain name. Your domain name should be an exact match to one of your 20 keywords, and though many would advise you to go conservative with your selection by choosing one of the six "Easy" keywords to rank, we suggest you instead pick one from the "Relatively Easy" group...or even a "Doable" keyword.

We prefer to stick to keyword.com, keyword.net, or keyword.org if possible, but we've also been able to rank for keyword.info as well (there doesn't seem to be any difference for the most part to Google). If your exact match domain is taken already, you can consider going two ways:

1. A variant of the main keyword using dashes within.

Example: If your keyword was "getting my ex back" and the exact match domain of "gettingmyexback.com" was taken (along with .net and .org), you could add dashes and register "getting-my-exback.com" instead.

We've used dashes whenever the need has risen and been successful, but

we're now more likely to use the second option when the exact match domain we're after is unavailable:

2. An additional letter at the end of the domain.

Example: We've really been ranking well lately by adding a letter "x" to the end of a domain we're after, and using the example above it would be "gettingmyexbackx.com".

Google reads the domain identically as it would to the root thanks to its automatic spelling correction routines, and we prefer this method to dashes now because the past few months have shown slightly superior results for us.

Either way, the power of an exact match domain is still extremely strong, and it's something you certainly want to make the cornerstone of your site's initial rank attempt.
